Why You Need a Survival Medicine Kit & What Should Be in It

Whether you purchase a stocked survival kit for sale, or you choose to create a survival first aid kit with your own custom supplies, it’s important you have access to first aid supplies at home, work, and in your car. When an emergency occurs, be it a natural disaster or minor accident, you’ll want to be able to reach first aid supplies instantly. It’s vital that you keep your first aid kits as well-stocked as possible so you’re as prepared as possible.

While first aid kits are widely available, some people prefer to create their own kits and customize the first aid supplies they keep stocked.

Necessary First Aid Supplies

If you choose to create a survival medical kit on your own, there are certain standard supplies every kit needs in order to be effective.

Bandages: Bandages & dressings can be used to stop bleeding and help protect wounds from infections:
  • Adhesive Bandages, assorted sizes
  • Adhesive Tape
  • Gauze Pads, assorted sizes
  • Gauze Rolls
  • Roll of Cotton or Cotton Balls
  • Duct Tape (can be used in an extreme emergency to safely close an open wound)

Medication: For cuts, pain & allergies, your survival first aid kit should also be stocked with medication:
  • Ibuprofen, or another pain reliever
  • Antihistamine (i.e. Benadryl)
  • Antiseptic Solution (i.e. Hydrogen Peroxide)
  • Antibiotic Ointment (i.e. Neosporin)
  • Eye drops or Eyewashv
  • Hydrocortisone Cream
  • Anti-diarrhea, Anti-nausea & Antacids
  • Backup Supply of Prescription Medications

Equipment & Other Supplies: Your survival medical kit should also include versatile and useful items such as:
  • Thermometers
  • Disposable Gloves
  • An Emergency Blanket
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • A Flashlight, and extra batteries
  • Basic First Aid Instructions
  • List of Emergency Numbers

When putting together your first survival medical kit or searching for survival kits for sale, remember there is no one right kit for everyone. Prepackaged survival first aid kits are easy to buy, but may not be complete. Many people choose to purchase stocked survival kits simply to use as a foundation for creating their own complete, customized kit.

Once you have a survival first aid kit put together, remember that it’s only going to be useful if you know how to use it. First aid courses are a great way to learn CPR and other survival basics, and first aid manuals or instructions can be useful reminders during an emergency. You should store your kit in a place that is easily accessible (for adults) and occasionally re-check to make sure it’s still stocked, that medications haven’t expired and that your batteries still work.

Whether you’re searching for a first aid kit to get started or you’re in need of additional first aid supplies, SOS Survival Products is proud to provide both survival kits and survival supplies for sale. Have a question? Give us a call! We’re happy to answer questions about any and all of our survival products.

How to Cook in an Emergency

When a hurricane hits, when a blizzard moves in or when you just lose power for an extended period of time, staying healthy and cooking real meals can become a challenge. However, those who prepare for emergencies and keep survival food and equipment stored away can continue to cook during and after disasters, and without electricity.

The Best Food for Survival Cooking

The key to building up your survival food storage is to ensure you’re stocking up on the right type of
food. The best survival foods are non-perishable items that have high calorie counts and good nutritional value. Ideally, your pantry should be stocked with a variety of food that can be used for survival cooking for two weeks. Some of the best foods for survival cooking include rice, beans, salt, canned food (meat, fruit, vegetables), pasta and peanut butter.

While emergency food bars and SOS Food bars from SOS Survival Products are a perfect options both for building up your survival food storage and taking with you on outdoor adventures, during extended emergencies you won’t want to rely on food bars alone. We also recommend freeze dried food such as Mountain House, which can be stored unopened for 7 to 25 years.

Emergency Cooking Equipment

In order to cook without power, you’ll need an emergency cooking stove that uses cooking fuel from a portable source. Cooking fuel options include (but are not limited to):

  • Butane – This is fuel that is useful both as cooking fuel for butane stoves and as lighter fuel for outdoor excursions. Butane stoves are lightweight and easy to use; however, butane does not vaporize well in cold temperatures.
  • Propane - This versatile cooking fuel can be used to power multiple devices during an emergency, such as a propane cooking range stove or a propane generator. Propane is inexpensive and widely available; however, propane produces carbon monoxide and should never be used indoors.
  • Canned Heat Cooking Fuel – These are cans that burn for hours at a time and provide enough heat to cook on folding stoves. This cooking fuel can be used inside; however, heat output is limited so folding stoves are best served when warming or reheating food, rather than cooking a meal from scratch.

Remember, your emergency cooking stove should be one you are familiar with (before an emergency occurs) and one you are comfortable using. If you don’t test and figure out how to use your survival stove and other equipment before an emergency situation begins, your equipment could end up being useless.

Today, preparing for emergency situations is easier than ever. From emergency food bars to emergency cooking stoves that can be used for both indoor and outdoor survival cooking, emergency equipment and supplies are widely available.
